British Nordic Walking & INWA

Background

The Suffolk School of Nordic Walking is affiliated via certificated instructor training to British Nordic Walking who are the  U.K’s only internationally recognised body licensed by the International Nordic Walking Federation (INWA). They were established in 2008 and 2000, respectively.

The Coddenham Centre introduced Nordic Walking training to the community and developed the Suffolk School of Nordic Walking in 2020, with the support of Active Suffolk and their Fit Villages scheme teaching the internationally recognised INWA 10-Step Method (see below).

British Nordic Walking

British Nordic Walking teaches the globally recognised Nordic Walking technique developed by the International Nordic Walking Federation (INWA) which means all our instructors can help people get the very most out of their exercise.

As the only representative of INWA in the UK, we benefit from and contribute to research into both Nordic Walking teaching methods and the health and fitness benefits of Nordic Walking.

By working with British Nordic Walking you help to support the UK’s Nordic Walking community as we reinvest our profits into projects that develop Nordic Walking as a popular health, wellbeing and fitness activity.

BNW trainers have been involved with Nordic Walking since it was first introduced to the UK and our volunteer board of directors are all enthusiasts with a drive to support you on your Nordic Walking path.

Joining a group of fellow Nordic Walkers is a sociable and fun way to get and stay fit.

What is the INWA 10-Step method of teaching?

British Nordic Walking train instructors to teach INWA’s original 10 Step Method, a tried and tested way of ensuring Nordic Walkers adopt the best posture and technique to get the most out of Nordic Walking as they progress through the Method. Developed by sports scientists and biomechanics experts, in conjunction with the development of ergonomically designed poles, this method of teaching Nordic Walking is recognised internationally.

The 10 Step Method includes all the knowledge you need to teach Nordic Walking effectively and safely. No further fitness qualifications are essential to become a Nordic Walking instructor although you might want to consider adding the Level 2 qualification to your toolkit if you want to enhance your offering with other fitness activities.

If you learn to Nordic Walk with an INWA/British Nordic Walking instructor you will be able to use the complete Nordic Walking technique that will bring you all the benefits that are attributed to the activity. No pale imitations with this method.

INWA

The International Nordic Walking Federation – INWA is the global governing body promoting Nordic Walking.

In 2000 INWA was founded in Finland, the mother land of Nordic Walking. The main purpose was to develop Nordic Walking education internationally and to create a global network of Nordic Walking National Trainers and instructors.

INWA is the only truly international organisation authorized by the creators of Nordic Walking to promote, develop and safeguard the principles and characteristics of Nordic Walking worldwide. In co-operation with professionals in sports, health and fitness, INWA develops innovative teaching methods and educational programs in Nordic Walking. INWA also collaborates with the scientific and medical communities offering research guidelines. INWA has over 20 official member organisations and Nordic Walking National Trainers and Instructors have been certified in over 40 countries around the world.
